When the Dogs finally visited Norwich we grabbed Johnny Cooke by the neck pinned him up against the old church walls and demanded that he answer our questions (ok, so it wasn’t quite as violent as that…)
You’ve already been on the road as part of the the line up for the Jim Beam Music tour along side the Raveonettes and the Boxer Rebellion (the BR album ‘Exits’ is out now!), what is it like headlining you own show?
It feels much like any other tour except we go on a lot later. I suppose it’s a little bit more responsibility on our shoulders, but when we’re supporting we give it our all and when we headline we give it our all.
So what has been your best gig so far?
After a long pause- Hamburg. Razorlight were supposed to be headlining but johnny pulled out ‘complaining about his throat’. So it [the crowd] was all “Razorlight Razorlight” and when we came on stage it all went deathly silent. Not the sort of reception we want! But then half way through the set they were *does a little jig* and we won them over. It was a rumble in the jungle and we won!
What has been your main inspiration?
cough from sam 10,000 things I’m a big Clash fan, big Jam fan. Grew up on them thanks to my older brothers. Anything from Irish folk to the Pixies.
So if you were stuck on a desert island what three tracks would you take with you?
‘When You Go Away’ the Water Boys, ‘The Ace Of Spades’ Motorhead, ‘Straight To Hell’ the clash, for when I wanted to leave.
There are a lot of new bands breaking though into the mainstream at the moment. We’ve already seen the rise of british bands such as Bloc Party and Franz Ferdinand. Who do you think is next up to make it big?
I don’t really care about big, just good. 10,000 things, the Rakes, the Cribs. We’re friends with them [Cribs] and they are really good guys, the arcade Fire and the Raveonettes. Those sort of bands excite me the most.
Where do you shop for your clothes? (elle girl stylee innit!?)
Sherry’s, Ganton Street in London. It’s no bigger than a cupboard and sells all the old mod gear. You know the dragon out of the hobbit? Yer well the chap who owns Sherry’s guards his shop like that dragon.
Describe your perfect cup of tea.
Medium amount of brewing, medium amount of milk, the only thing in excess is the sugar; two big fuckers well stirred.
A lot of your fans are most probably in some sort of education, do you have any advice for them?
Yes. There’s no harm in having no plans.
Do you have any plans for the future now?
I’d prefer to be more spontaneous. There is no master plan for Dogs really, just to better ourselves at every turn. You know, just build my own water-park. I want to roll out of bed down a water chute and there’ll be a butler waiting at the bottom with a big fry up.
The album ‘Turn Against The Land’ is out now.
