Interview - Neat People

Written by The Dish | Wednesday, March 1, 2006 |

The Dish catches up with Neat People

Hello how are you?
I’m good thank you, a bit tired, I’ve been doing the vocals for our single today.

How’s the single coming along?
Umm, we’ve just got to finish the recording. Make the video, do the front cover and the back cover, write the b-side, and learn how to play it live….I have got an idea for the b-side, but it’s secret.

Baby I’m Bored will be out about late March/early April. But don’t worry, we’ll remind you nearer the time.Album?
Not yet, we’re just doing the single with this label Rekabet, I think we’ll see how that goes and hopefully release some more.
When I do think about making an album, I think I’d like to do 37 tracks, then if they’re only half good then that makes 18 ½ good tracks, which is better than 10.

Neat People have been recruited for the next Bluetones tour, those of you who can should pop along.
It’ll be fun, it’ll be a bit hard with the drummer though. He doesn’t like me. Its like a family, we fall out quite a bit. But it’s good, Its not a bad thing. We love each other really. I just like a bit of woe….I’m a melancholy maniac.

How do you describe your music?
I should think about this then I can have an answer. It’s a bit dirty pop. Abba meets Sepultura. It’s a bit like a fruit salad on a hot day in a desert. Like a fine meal, like macaroni cheese. That’s how I describe it…it’s just refreshing, I don’t know what else its like…fruit, yeah fruit, fruity Abba? I dunno, I’ll have to think about it.

What motivated you into making music?
I guess it’s when children have those shapes games and they try and force a circle through a square hole then they finally get it in the circle…I guess you end up where you’re supposed to be. You do what you have to do I reckon, there isn’t really an alternative.
So is it a case of you only ever seeing yourself doing music?
I could make risotto. I made it once it’s really nice, so I could do that. And crush boxes, but if I couldn’t do that  then I’d just go around shaking a tin, and children would come up and kick me in saying, “He said he would be famous!” I’d probably have a beard by that point too.

Any other plans lined up other than the Bluetones tour?
Releasing records and being not rubbish. We’re playing a Colchester nightclub at the beginning of March and a box, well the Box at the end of March.

Musical influences…
Metallica, Faith No More, they’re my favourite, hmmm…Ben Folds Five, Blue by Joni Mitchell. I was playing it on the piano…I can’t play piano. Bands who play good songs, I don’t really care what they sound like. I don’t really get when people say not my kind of thing…it’s either shit or it isn’t. Rage Against The Machine, Radiohead.
Sometimes I think I’m in the Strokes. I think I might be. Sometimes they write songs, and I think I’m sure I wrote that the other week…

And finally, how do you make the Perfect Cup of Tea?
First you have to tie a bit of string to it, and then tie it to a washing line, and spin it around a bit. I dunno. It’s all about the colour, it has to be off brown. I keep making everyone la-teas at work and people keep sending them back. I’m the tea boy at work.

Where do you work?
I’m not allowed to tell you.
