Interview - Josh Weller

Written by Lily Ayre | Sunday, May 7, 2006 |

Lily Ayre interviews Josh Weller

So, what’s going on in the land of Josh Weller and the Availables at the moment?

We’ve got a few gigs lined up, check out our myspace for details. We’re opening for Glen Matlock from The Sex Pistols. We’ve also done an interview for TV Hits magazine so l’m looking forward to seeing my face among the likes of McFly. And finishing off a new CD.

How did you all meet?
We met about two years ago. We were extras on Emmerdale.*Raise one eyebrow*

*Silence*

So you’ve been playing together for…
One year now. We (Remy Mallett - Bass, and Geordie Hawdon - Drums) are all doing courses through Access to Music.

What/who made you want to pick up the guitar and start writing songs?
Phil Collins, Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley.

The rise in popularity of acoustic singer-songwriters in the last year is down to the likes of James Blunt. What effect do you think this has had on the industry?
It’s just a cycle of cliché. Music goes in and out of fashion, everything will have its time. Here’s an interesting James Blunt fact for you. Apparently his surname is actually Bloont but they wouldn’t allow him to use that name as it’s too posh to market. True story.

Would you say you have any musical influences?
Definitely, everyone has influences. Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, The Beach Boys, Prince, Chet Baker. The history of time…

What are your plans for Josh Weller and the Availables?
To keep on touring. We’re playing New York in September and Hong Kong in October. Eventually I plan to take over the world. Wellerland. Got a nice ring to it.

So when you’re touring, what do you like to listen to?
Bjork, Arlo Guthrie, Lagwagon and The Lost Levels.

What new bands would you recommend The Dish readers look out for?
The Lost Levels, definitely look out for them. And Dan Mayfield. I saw him last night and he absolutely blew me away, a real talent. The Lost Levels, definitely look out for them. And Dan Mayfield. I saw him last night and he absolutely blew me away, a real talent.

Other interesting Josh Weller related facts:

- Mango is his favourite fruit
- He’d like to be a stick insect
- Earl Grey is his favourite tea, you put the milk in after, and no sugar.
