Interview - The Motorettes

Written by Suzanne Bunce | Friday, July 7, 2006 |

Suzzane Bunce interviews The Motorettes.

For those who don’t know, who are The Motorettes and how did you form?

Robin: We’ve been together ages. We’re all from the same town, a place called Tynemouth, it’s by the coast.

Jed: Jack’s my brother, then we met Robin. We were in a band with some one else, but it was rubbish, so we formed The Motorettes.

How did you come up with the band name?

Robin: It’s a combination of “Motorhead” and “The Ronettes”, and it sounds better than “Ronhead”!

What’s the new single, “You Gotta Look The Parts”, about?

Robin: It’s kinda like…not a piss - take, but having a go at all the bands that look the same, and that sort of thing, but also about kids who want something more, something more inspiring.

Do you have any plans for an album?

Jed: Absolutely! It’s done.

Robin: It’s ready to go now, it’s released on July 31st. But you can download it from iTunes now.

Who would you say your main influences are?

Jed: Musically or in life?

Either!

Robin: Well musically, we’ve evolved, and lots of different things have influenced us. We never set out to sound a certain way, and our sound has changed over the years - we never used to sound like we do now, 5 years ago; we just went with what we were good at, and what works for us. Loads of bands now are desperate to sound like Arctic Monkeys, and it’s like…you’re already too late, you should do it yourselves.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever played?

Robin: The last gig we played at home, it was like a homecoming, and that was great.

Jed: We played a gig outside at Durham Uni, with loads of posh boys pissed on Pimms, that was good!

What’s your favourite song to play live?

Robin: It changes. The sets kind of over before it starts, it’s so quick. We only play about 9 songs, and it’s less than half an hour, so it’s hard to choose a favourite song. Though I don’t like the ones where I sing out of tune!

Who are your favourite bands at the moment?

All: Kubichek are ace!

Jack: I like Shaftshakers and The Proclaimers.

If you weren’t in a band, what would you be doing?

Robin: Thinking that I could be in a band! We used to sell t - shirts for other bands, and I used to work in a record shop. All the shitty stuff, you know?!

What are 3 things you’ve learnt since being in a band?

Robin: I’m not as clever as I thought I was! And I can’t drink as much as I thought I could!

Jack: You should have a good time all the time.

What are 3 things you’d like to have achieved by this time next year?

Jack: Well Glastonbury will have happened by this time next year so that would be good.

Headlining it or just playing it?

Fuck it, headlining it!

Robin: Have the album out in loads of different countries like Japan and Australia. And to not get bottled off the stage when we play!

The Motorettes self - titled debut album is released on July 31st, and is also available for download now from iTunes.
