The Rocks - The Games Is Up / Too Much Too Soon

Written by Jessica Ann | Saturday, October 13, 2007 |

The Rocks Press Shot“Think The Clash being eaten by lions, Brilliant!” - is what one reviewer had to say about The Rocks. Erm, is that a compliment? Interesting…

Anyway, I was set the task of reviewing The Rocks’ double A side, ‘The Game Is Up’ and ‘Too Much Too Soon’.

When I first hear ‘The Game Is Up’, I make an audio comparison of lead vocals, James Taylor’s voice, to that of The Killers’, Brandon Flowers.

However this comparison is disregarded completely as the track progresses, showing a slight punky edge to itself. It is undeniably catchy. Yet, the repetitive lyrics slowly begin to get a tad, well, boring. But, I do find myself resisting to get up and dance. I rather like the ‘wine’ of Taylor’s voice which is backed up by super awesome bass lines and indie-fied guitar riffs.

Onto ‘Too Much Too Soon’, another track compromising of an addictive chorus, back-up harmonies and catchy guitar riffs. On second/third listen the song sounds a whole lot more appealing in comparison to first hearing. I enjoy Taylor’s repetitive wail of ‘Ohhhh toooonight’, finding myself singing along (badly). The verses and bridge fit very well and in general this is quite a cute little song, but I prefer the previous track’s edgier sound.

So, all in all, while both tracks are nothing super special, the band are worth checking out if seeking an indie-pop music shot!

‘The Game Is Up’ / ‘Too Much Too Soon’ singe will be released on limited 7″ Vinyl and download only through Weekender Records on 22nd October 2007
