The Color Fred - Bend To Break

Written by Vince Pettit | Saturday, October 27, 2007 |

The Color FredThe Color Fred had been in the mind of Fred Mascherino long before he joined up as lead guitarist / vocalist for Taking Back Sunday.

With the meteoric rise of Taking Back Sunday, gaining two gold records and the further touring commitments, this led to The Color Fred being put on the back burner.

In spring of this year (2007), ‘Bend To Break’ started to take shape, and with the announcement that Mascherino was leaving Taking Back Sunday, in the wake of arguements over the direction of the band, The Color Fred now has his full commitment.

Taking leading duties on Guitars, Bass, Vocals and Keys, Mascherino called in for help (only on a few songs) from Steve Curtiss (Drums), PJ Bond (additional vocals and bass) and Clint Stelfox on piano + organ.

‘Bend To Break’ was produced by Lou Giordano, who has worked with the likes of Sunny Day Real Estate, The Ataris, The Lemonheads, Hüsker Dü and Mascherinos former band Taking Back Sunday among others.

The Color Fred’s debut album doesn’t stray too far from the sound of Taking Back Sunday, opening with ‘Get Out!’, described on the press release as a ‘three minute firecracker’, it certainly lives up to expectations. ‘If I surrender’ is another catchy, fast paced song, proving popular already to fans who have listened to the album on Myspace.

There’s a mixture of balls-out powerpop, along with a fusion of slower songs throughout the album. One of the slower songs ‘Don’t pretend’, is surely a tune that will bring out the lighters on live perfomances from The Color Fred.

Overall, it’s a good powerpop album, which I’ll certainly be listening to for a while.

It makes you wonder where TBS are going for their next album if you think back to Mascherinos reasons for leaving the band.

‘Bend To Break’ is released on 30th October in the US and the 5th November in the UK on Equal Vision.
