God Save The Queen (Foo Fighters)

Written by Joanna Cole | Friday, November 2, 2007 |

Foo Fighters

Last nights EMAs saw Foo Fighters open the show with their hit single ‘The Pretender’ and then a cover of the Sex Pistols ‘God Save the Queen’.

As a new section on The Dish we will be featuring our favourite covers and to kick it all off, I have chosen this weeks ‘God Save The Queen’ by the Foo Fighters.

The 1977 hit for the punk rock band, topped the charts during the Queens’ silver jubilee at number 2. The tune has been covered live by many punk bands and rock bands alike, the song was also released as a single by Motörhead in 2000 after featuring in their ‘We Are Motörhead’ album.

With the return of the Sex Pistols and their imminent tour this month, it was fitting that the band chose this legendary number to perform at the EMAs. Foos pulled off a fantastic cover of the classic punk anthem, and the strength in Dave Grohls voice turned what was originally a DIY assault on the monarchy, in to an arena filling tune.

Dave Grohl and his band mates have covered an impressive array of songs by classic artists including ‘Baker Street’ by Jerry Rafferty, ‘Danny Says’ by The Ramones and more recently ‘Keep The Car Running’ by Arcade Fire.
