NME Cool List ‘07 Revealed

Written by Joanna Cole | Wednesday, November 7, 2007 |

Lethal Bizzle Our Number 1

NME have announced their annual ‘Cool List’ and as always Pete makes an appearance.

With the junkie rocker in at 34 this year, maybe the folks at NME have made way for ‘actual’ cool people in the top ten? . . . and it seems that someone has their head screwed on as Frank Carter from Gallows leads the cool pack, and rightfully so.

The young punk rocker is straight in at number 1 this year, overtaking last years ‘winner’ Beth Ditto. Their are some pleasing names included for example, Morgan Yeah? (Does It Offend You, Yeah?), Simon Niel (Biffy Clyro), MIA and Mr Cool himself Bizzle but as we’ve come to expect from the magazine, people like Ryan Jarmen (The Cribs), Jamie Reynolds (Klaxons) and Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys) taint the top ten. These NME faves our nothing compared to the person who jumps from 50 to 8 this year . . . wait for it . . . Ms Winehouse stumbles in and quite frankly I’m not suprised (they probably all drink with her in the Hawley Arms). This is the same list that had Pete and Carl joint number one in ‘04 and included ludicrous entries like Nelly, Jamelia and 2002s number 1 Justin Timberlake.

The 50 coolest people in music according to NME are as follows:

1. Frank Carter – Gallows
2. Jamie Reynolds – Klaxons (13)

48. Santogold - check her out www.myspace.com/santogold (you won’t be disappointed)
49. Dev Hynes – Lightspeed Champion
50. Spider Webb – The Horrors

(last years positions in brackets)

NME editor Conor McNicholas had this to say of the list: “Thirty years after the height of punk there are a whole load of new bands making wild and passionate noise. But it takes more than just great music to make it to the top of the Cool List - these people effortlessly set trends with every breath they take - and it’s great to see that people like Keith Richards prove that you don’t have to be young to do this!”

Trends set by included artists: sniffing ashes (Keith Richards), not washing (Pete Doherty), substituting food for wine (Amy Winehouse), creating a new hole in the atmosphere above North London, just to look like you’ve stuck wet fingers in a plug socket (Spider Webb).

Expect a rant very soon . . .
