Amy Winehouse iTunes Bestseller

Written by Prue Watson | Wednesday, December 12, 2007 |

It seems that Amy Winehouse’s frenzied tabloid tales of cancelled gigs, wayward health and imprisoned husband have done her no harm in record sales. Her critically acclaimed album, ‘Back to Black,’ was Apple’s online music store’s bestselling downloaded album of the year, the website revealed yesterday.

The most popular download music store said Mika’s ‘Grace Kelly was the bestselling download single of the year.

Oliver Schusser, director of iTunes Europe, said the makeup of the chart proved that digital consumers were now broadly aligned with mainstream tastes.

“2007 has been a fantastic year for digital music. We’ve grown our catalogue from 3m to 6m,” he said.

The growing popularity of downloads is not enough to compensate for declining sales and piracy as record companies have struggled to remodel their businesses to the digital age.

Amy Winehouse deserves the number one slot but I am wondering whether her next album will be anyway near as good due to her health.
