Past, Present and Future : Paul Wilkerson

Written by Vince Pettit | Friday, February 1, 2008 |

Paul WilkersonThis weekend sees BIG celebrate it’s 7th Birthday at The Academy in Cambridge, we talk to one of the BIG residents Paul Wilkerson about his past year, what he’s up to at the moment and what he has planned for 2008!

Like most DJs, Paul started out as a clubber and progressed on from there…

Past

Briefly, how and when did you get into the music scene?

I was a clubber before a DJ. I remember my first real dance scene experience was a seduction weekender back in 1998. That sparked off my interest in DJing and I got my first proper set at an event called “Freek” at Ashby Hall (Lincoln).

Describe your style in 3 words

Techy, Dirty, Tough.

How was your 2007?

Highlights –Working with Jamie Taylor on 3 productions, starting my Digital Label, RPRdigital. Playing at the BIG Halloween Ball which has become a bit of an institution, Also headlining at Roobarb, which was a great honour for me.

Lowlights – One of by best mates leaving for Australia, good on him I say but I miss him.

Who has been your favourite DJs and producers of 2007?

My style has changed quite a bit over the years, which has opened my ears to many new genres. I have collected quite a few tracks by Valentino Kanzyani, Marco Bailey, DJ Link, Sander Van Doorn and Axel Karakis who I think have really been influencing the Techno and Tech Trance sound. DJ wise I still like to listen to Andy Farley when I’m out and about. He plays some really chunky stuff earlier on in his sets.

Present

What are you up to at the moment?
Holding down a normal job, looking for new tracks for the Label, enjoying my residency for BIG and trying to get some more mixes done.

Who are you listening to at the moment?
The main ones that keep hanging around my CD player are, The Chemical Brothers new album, Nicklebacks new album, Tony De Vit Live in Tokyo, Sasha live in Ibiza, Timberland, Pink Floyd (I’m always listening to Floyd).

What do you do when you’re not playing out?
Look for tracks for the next gig / mix, eat cheesy Bites pizza’s, play Golf, watch Movies, try and see my niece as much as possible because she is growing up so fast!

Where can people get your tunes / mixes?
You can find my tunes on my site www.rprdigital.co.uk which is powered by trackitdown.net also www.junodownload.com . My mixes can be downloaded from www.myspace.com/paulwilkerson

Future

What do you have planned for 2008?
I have the opportunity to go backpacking around Australia and New Zealand at the end of the year which is at the top of my list right now. I would then like to use that experience to influence future productions and also I would like to get my head around Logic!

Who do you think will be the next big thing in 2008?
- DJ
I’ll pass on this one. There is quite a few guys I would like to see make it but only time will tell.

- Producer
I know he is a friend and colleague of mine which may seem to make it biased. But I think Dan Stone is making huge leaps and bounds with his tunes. He has had some tracks signed to major labels in 2007 which proves the quality of his work and I think things will only go from strength to strength for him. Good luck Dan!
