Atonement Wins Best Film, La Vie en Rose Takes Four Awards

Written by Vince Pettit | Sunday, February 10, 2008 |

AtonementThe World War II romance movie Atonement has won the Best Film Award at tonight’s BAFTA awards. With 14 nominations going into the night, it looked like the film was going to lead the way in awards, unfortunately for everyone involved in the film they only took away 2 awards.

It’s not all bad news though, with one of the awards was the Best Film award and the other for production design.

La Vie en Rose came away from the BAFTAs with the most awards tonight, after being recognised for music, costume design and make up. Along with this Marion Cotillard collected the best actress award for her part in the film.

In an emotional speech she said “It has been the most incredible adventure, I loved very single second.”

Daniel Day-Lewis who picked up best actor award, paid tribute to Cotillard in his acceptance speech saying “Never mind all the other qualities in her astonishing performance, for sheer balls alone, I feel Marion should have this award as well.”

Before the awards, Day-Lewis had commented on British films and how hard it is to make it. “It’s never been easy for people to get films made in England. An event like this might encourage people to put their hands in their pocket.”

The 50-year-old actor added: There are some fantastic English films here this year. The section which focuses on English films might seem provincial but we realise what’s possible just using home grown stuff.”
