Don’t Turn Around (Aswad)

Written by Joanna Cole | Friday, February 22, 2008 |

AswadAfter last weeks amazing cover I really didn’t think I could top the Hoff . . . . . . . . but I have found the best bunch of covers ever! One song with 6 versions, yes you read right 6 versions of this wonderful song.

It gets better, not only was the original recorded by the (in my opinion) bloody marvellous Tina Turner back in 1986, 2 years later the one and only Bonnie Tyler covered the song on her ‘Notes From America’ album.

The next intepretation came from US soul singer Luther Ingram who inspired my favourite cover of this song . . . AS freakin’ WAD.

Now for all you kiddies out there Aswad are a reggea band who have been performing since the 70’s. I bloody love them. My childhood was riddled with Aswad hits such as ‘Shine’, ‘Don’t Turn Around’ and the Eagles remix ‘Best Of My Love’.

Who’s the next 2 versions by? I hear you say . . . . only Neil Diamond and Swedish popsters Ace Of Base. Neil Diamond released the track in 1992 and in 1994, Ace of Base acheived huge success with the single.

To top it all the song was originally written by Diane Warren and Albert Hammond, the father of Albert Hammond Jr from the US band The Strokes.

My favourite cover of this classic tune is obviously Aswads’ attempt but a bit of Tina never hurt either, so for your viewing pleasure and for your fix of classic Turner power pop and to be honest, just because I am obsessed . . . enjoy.

(the following video is on You Tube and we cannot guarantee its longevity)

I’m very excited that I have managed to top last weeks cover, but where do I go from here?
