Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007)

Written by Nick Da Costa | Tuesday, February 26, 2008 |

Fantastic FourAfter they made their less than Fantastic debut onto our cinema screens, one of Marvel comics foundation stones attempts to regain our favour in the form of a sequel, bringing back the original cast and director to juggle a wedding with the mysterious presence of the cosmic Silver Surfer.

A Fantastic premise (a pun still worthy of a kneecapping), no less, but is the film actually any good?

Better than the original, but only in increments. Evans and Chiklis seem very comfortable in their roles of team clown, Johnny Storm, and his ‘craggy’ foil Ben Grimm, and their banter works up the dysfunctional family element nicely. However, the growing media exposure is shoehorned in at the most awkward of moments, the teams nemesis, Victor Von Doom, acts increasingly like a slimy huckster more than a threat, while Gruffudd and Alba as the ostensible leads are all but excruciating; Alba looking especially freaky in a slutty wig and eerie cerulean contacts.

Silver Surfer

What’s worse, the only truly great moments in the film, the appearances of the wonderfully realised Silver Surfer, are hampered by Alba’s atrocious performance, as the commanding tones of Fishburne bounce dully off her wooden delivery. It’s only when this Fantastic Four are absent and the Surfer is alone, showing off the clever CGI, that it’s almost impressive, though it does leave you with the unfortunate impression of a far better film having been lost. More a case of the adventures of a Scooby Doo gang rather than a Super Cool team.
