Lagerfeld On Anorexia

Written by Morgan Jensen | Thursday, March 6, 2008 |

PrestigeLegendary designer Karl Lagerfeld has once again spouted controversy with his latest interview in Hong Kong’s Prestige Magazine. Despite having undergone a huge weight loss transformation of his own in recent years, he has said that weight has nothing to do with the fashion industry.

Karl, who is not shy of a controversial comment or three, has been quoted regarding the weight issue in Prestige saying, “this is a subject I won’t discuss. You know why? In France, there are a large percentage of young girls who are overweight and less than one percent are skinny. So let’s talk about the 25 percent who have a weight problem, or are overweight. We don’t need to discuss the less than one percent. Anorexia is nothing to do with fashion.”

In the same article, however, Lagerfeld reveals that for him “there is no scale for spending” and that “you can never overpay for a real sensation”. Interesting words for a man that seems so concerned with world issues.

His comments will no doubt spark debate, as was most likely his intention. To make a remark as broad as one that would suggest fashion does not contribute to the problem of anorexia is literally laying yourself out for criticism. Fashion houses are notorious for choosing underweight, angular models and this has always sparked debate and anger. To suggest that the two cannot be linked will surely set tongues wagging.

Apart from his controversial remarks, the article is an interesting insight into his strange and fascinating world. His thoughts on his success and his explanations of his style show a darker, deeper side to the designer that reveal why he has been at the top for so long. The Chanel designer, who is enjoying his 25th year with the fashion house, also reveals his passions for books, publishing and photography in the article.

Despite his seemingly careless words, there is no doubt that Lagerfeld is an icon on his own, and has been the face and creative genius behind the continuing success of Chanel, and this article just cements his place at the top. Perhaps his willingness to flirt with controversy is a part of his success.
