The Blakes - Two Times

Written by David Moss | Thursday, March 6, 2008 |

The BlakesBrothers Snow and Garnet Keim formed The Blakes when they met up with drummer Bob Husak in Seattle. According to a press release for new single Two Times, they rented a ‘…cheap hotel room till they’d written a bunch of songs’ and after a few gigs were quickly signed to the US record label Light in the Attic.

The new single Two Times sounds a lot similar to that of Sunshine Underground if the sunshine was taken away! Crashing symbols and power chords are the recipe to make this bittersweet tune. It’s got some sweet sounding instruments but Blakes’ lyrics show a darker side.

The guitars are probably the only thing that gives this track any sense of pace, it’s certainly not the adrenaline rush that the promoter thinks it is. By keeping this pace from beginning to end, it does allow the listener to sing along and it will stay in your head for a good while.

B-side Die however, starts with some haunting vocals and nicely changes between the same sort of vocals that Two Times showed. The guitars show a little more freedom with a short solo and the drums also seem to move away from the repetitive beat.
