Debenhams is to start charging its customers for carrier bags.
The top department store is to charge 5p for each carrier bag, but the scheme is on a trail basis only for the time being. The move makes Debenhams the first fashion retailer to levy a charge on bags.
The scheme is an bid by the eco-conscious store to reduce their carbon footprint as it’s been revealed that some 12 billion carrier bags are handed out by retailers each year.
Once the department store have gauged customer reaction they will either continue, or also consider the introduction of reusable cotton bags.

One Response to “Debenhams go green”
Debenhams “pay for a carrier bag” is a fraud being foisted upon a gullible public. The cost of the bag is already included in the purchase price, the bags are not free. The customer is therefore being required to pay twice for something to carry home their purchases in. If I went out to buy a new suit I wouldn’t expect to have to take a bag with me large enough to put it in.If debenhams is really concerned about the environment why don’t they use paper bags produced from sustainable forests? The staff say “it all goes to charity” this is not true. What goes to charity is what is left after all production and distribution costs have been covered. This is not about the environment it is about Debenhams profits masquerading as “eco-friendly”. This is “greenwash” at it’s most hypocritical.
