With the help of the Dick Van Dyke School of vocalisation, the latest offering from Kate Nash establishes itself as another of her trademark songs within seconds.
The distinct accented vocals and down-to-earth lyrics such as “don’t tell me you didn’t try and check out my bum” coupled with a decisively kitsch title, merry happy (think pumpkin soup‘, help mould this song into something of a parody of itself.
Although the commercial value of the piano based ‘merry happy’ is palpable and its chart success most probably a done deal, I find myself reluctant in re-listening to this song.
The repetitiveness of both the chorus and the bridge subtract from the quality this track might hold and it seems that Nash has found a formula, admittedly one that appears to bring her commercial success, that she refuses to stray from – when this song seems to suggest that a little risk taking is exactly what Nash needs.
