Past, Present and Future… Alex Metric
Written by Hannah Urinovsky | Tuesday, March 11, 2008 |

His characteristic sound of electro, house and soul make Alex Metric one of the hottest funk-beaten hopefuls of this year. He produces, he sings, he writes…and he loves to get sweaty in clubs. We talk about the past and present of Metric and find out what this DIY guy has in store for us in the future.
With inspirations from indie, French house and filter disco, Alex Metric has created an innovative and inspiring sound which he describes as “choppy, bleepy, noisy goodness“. Drawing muses from a wide array of music types, Metric mixes styles and varieties in compiling a modern electronic resonance. Alex Metric, who originally began singing in bands, was converted by the sound of big-beat and was later produced. His passion for electronic music and dance-enthused sound can be heard on the new EP In Your Machine.
Whilst Metric claims that 2007 was “a bit of a blur“, it was without a doubt a great year for him (minus the studio flooding, that is). With highlights such as partying at Tommy Lee’s house and meeting with the Beastie Boys, it is easy to understand why Metric has been flying high. An arrangement of playing great gigs and making superb records have made Metric the dance floors buzz of last year. 2007’s genre-smashing track “What She Wants” brings a Daft Punk-esque electronic thump together with gritty rock rhythms; if you ask me, Metric’s success over the last year can be summed up in this four minute track.
Named X-FM’s “Remixer of 2007″ by Eddy Temple Morris, Metric has followed in the invigorating footsteps of the likes of Jacques le Cont, Unkle and Phones – his own favourite producer of 2007. “Fuck genres, fuck fitting into a style,” Metric articulates; this is about funky electronics and real songwriting…the whole reason he got into music in the first place. Metric is currently in the mad-busy process of finishing two albums: he has been writing and producing Adam Freelands new album which will be finished in about two weeks, along with his own which should be done within a couple of months. His new song In Your Machine, out March 24th, pans out his choppy vocals with an 80’s chic beat that it just all-too-easy to dance to. Aside from the title track, the rest of the album proves certain to sell some euphoric, dirty, inspirational and quite-frankly peculiar ideas. You can check out some of these sounds at http://www.myspace.com/alexmetric. Metric’s tunes and mixes are also available on vinyl and from all the major download sites.

Along with X-FM’s title of “Remixer of 2007″, Alex Metric was also acclaimed Best Breakthrough Producer in this years Breakspoll. Breakspoll originally began as an online voting society set up to value and reward break-beat artists who were pressing the genre into the 21st century. The awards which have remained in London’s Fabric since their kicking off in 2001 saw Alex Metric take home a 2008 prize, along with other Breakthrough Producers Beat Assassins, M.I. Loki, Maelstrom and Plaza De Funk. Talking of his award, Metric comments: “It’s weird to be honest. I really don’t feel what I do is breakbeat. I’m chuffed people within that scene are into what I’m doing, but I don’t like the pigeonholing that goes along with an award like that.”
When he’s not listening to The Kills or playing out, Metric is sat in the studio busying away at more elated, anticipated tunes – “sad innit“, he says. With finishing his new album and getting a live show on the road, his vintage 80’s keytar is eagerly at the ready in awaiting big plans for 2008. Whilst Metric predicts Siriusmo and Primary 1 will be big things, we think that Alex Metric’s all work, all play attitude will make him the noise-hungry artist to watch out for this year.
