Semi Finalists - Odd Situation

Written by Jess Collings | Wednesday, March 12, 2008 |

Semi FinalistsIn a music scene fuelled by passing trends and the success of a band today seeming to be based on what fashion items can be attributed to its genre (new rave’s glow sticks, for example), the space for small Indie bands seems limited. And yet, having already been tipped by the NME and on their second album, London based band Semifinalists appear to have found a gap in the music industry they are firmly set on filling.

Their latest single, “Odd Situation” (which can be found on www.myspace.com/semifinalists) seems to attack every genre three-piece Adriana, Chris and Ferry could envisage. With the vocals residing somewhere between the Geek-Chic of Hot Chip and the electro-ethereality of Goldfrapp, the track remains understated in its exploration of its roots. The electric backing alludes to the music idiosyncratic to the SNES (for those of us who remember it) allowing the track to tap into the retro theme seeming to permeate through the NME masses, and as such puts this band in good stead of a little more well-deserved recognition.

After the success of their first album in it being named as one of the NME’s top 50 albums of 2006, the band have taken the subsequent year to construct their second album “2”, from which Odd Situation is born – tipped as mixing “80’s new wave pop, funk, and disco, as well as dreamy electronic shoegaze” the second album, released in June on V2/Cooperative music, looks set to continue in the fashion of this single and if so is most definitely worth a listen.
