In their latest single Modern Drummer, Norweigan trio Ungdomskulen rebel against the machine built music scene with almost 6 minutes of unadulterated creativity. Rough edged and furiously executed, their place in supporting the Young Knives on their UK tour (15th- 30th March) seems like an odd but intriguing combination.
Although the UK charts are probably not quite ready for such musical diversity, this is more of a blessing than a hindrance to the band in the preservation of such ingenuity as “modern drummer” demonstrates. The seamless transition from steady guitar hooks to a fury of riffs against the skilled drumming which the track itself is used to exemplify, such a build up of tension is created that the boundaries of the track itself seem as if they will burst.
The strained vocals suit this perfectly, and although the track is almost 6 minutes in length it does not at any point become wearing, a rare skill in this genre. Adrenalin fuelled, ruthless - almost brutal -in its ascent, this song is everything bands who so carelessly label themselves as post-punk and progressive could hope to emulate.
“Modern Drummer” is released on 31st March through Ever Records and can be previewed on the band’s MySpace, www.myspace.com/ungdomskulen.
