The Orphanage UK Release This Weekend
Written by Ruari Burgham | Wednesday, March 19, 2008 |
In recent memory, no horror film has stirred up so much interest as ‘The Orphanage’. In it’s home country of Spain, the Orphanage (or ‘El Orfanato’) was nominated for 14 prestigious Goya awards, and walked away with 7. It was also considered to be the Spanish entry for best foreign film at the 2007 Academy Awards. This is, by no means, your average chiller.
Produced by Guillermo Del Toro (Of super popular and critically acclaimed ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ fame) and directed by first time feature film director Juan Antonio Bayona, The Orphanage tells the story of Laura, whose happiest, formative memories were of growing up in a seaside orphanage. Thirty years later, Laura, husband Carlos and young son Simon return with plans to renovate the long abandoned building and re-model it as a home for disabled children.
Before long, however, Simon’s imagination begins to get the better of him, and disturbing repressed memories are brought to the fore of Laura’s troubled mind. As the grand opening of the home for disabled children gets closer, Laura begins to become more and more convinced that something evil lurks within…
Well, this all sounds immensely exciting.
