From the energetic and crashing intro of ‘Call to Arms’, it was obvious that Dopamine were on fire on the last night of their UK tour. Neil Starr, who must be one of the nicest guys in rock was in good spirits as usual, as he jovially chatted in between songs.
The whole night was really special and it was an emotional moment when Starr announced it was Day’s last show with Dopamine. They then played a magnificent, haunting version of ‘I Disappear’. It was captivating to hear everyone singing back “Do we just give up now?” in unison to this beautiful, hypnotic, enchanting song. This song belongs to Day and he will be missed.
Surprise highlight of the night was when the band launched into a cover of Nirvana’s ‘Breed’. F*cking amazing are the only words that can describe it, everyone in the packed Joiners was totally in awe and blown away. “Wow, not many people could pull that off!” said my mate with a look of shock on her face and she was totally right. It was so intense that the spirit of Cobain must have been looking down and smiling on the Joiners for that perfect 3 minutes!
The quality of the musicianship in the band and the intelligence and sophistication in their lyrics suggests that they’ll be packing out arenas very soon. They are youthful, enthusiastic, charismatic and so much fun, with a diverse set list that more established bands would be proud of.
Ryan Day has to be one of the best, most perceptive guitarists on the scene right now, it’s brilliant to watch how into it he gets. He has an amazing stage presence and is a joy to watch. His guitar seems to be an extension of his body rather than ‘just’ an instrument he plays.
Dopamine truly entertain and it’s obvious they are up there for the love of it. I feel privileged to have witnessed such a special night and it was great to see everyone leave with huge grins on their faces.
Look out for ATTACK! ATTACK! (featuring Dopamine’s Starr and Day) when they tour the UK this June. Their debut album is out later this year.
