Mariah Carey & Madonna Pass Elvis records

Written by Suzanne Bunce | Thursday, April 3, 2008 |

Mariah Carey has taken the record previously held by Elvis Presley for being the American artist with the most number one singles in US chart history.

Presley had 17 number one singles in the US, but this week Mariah Carey’s new single, “Touch My Body” became her 18th number one on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. The single is taken from Carey’s new album, “E = MC²”, which is scheduled to be released on April 15th.

Speaking about breaking Presley’s record, Carey told the Associated Press: “I’m just feeling really happy and grateful. I really can never put myself in the category of people who have not only revolutionised music but also changed the world, that’s a completely different era and time. In terms of my ethnicity, always feeling like an outsider, always feeling different… for me it’s about saying, ‘Thank you Lord, for giving me the faith to believe in myself when other people had written me off.”

Madonna smashed another of Presley’s records for the most singles to reach the US Top Ten this week, when her new single “4 Minutes” became her 37th top ten hit.
