Subways - Girls & Boys (Single)

Written by Jess Collings | Monday, April 7, 2008 |

After a brief break from the music scene to record their new album, ‘All Or Nothing’, Indie three piece The Subways have returned with the first single of the new album “Girls & Boys”. Describing it as “our most ambitious track to date” on their website, the band are obviously keen to make the track as accessible as possible by making it a free download (available at www.thesubways.net/download/).

Launching into itself with a series of Zepplin inspired drum breaks and guitar riffs that suggest the song will be more heavy metal than the garage-indie Subways fans have become accustomed to, the song appears to battle with itself throughout its fairly shot duration. The vocals, unstrained and laid back, exude an air of quiet confidence, whereas the guitar riffs convey entirely the opposite - loud, straining to achieve something, energetic and heavy.

In itself, this creates an almost Shiny Toy Guns-esque track, a song lined with what can only be described as musical anitheses. “Girls & Boys” is more than worth the free download, and makes for an interesting single - it’s not the groundbreaking material it first appears it may be, but certainly offers another dimension to what is already a fairly multi-dimensional band and provides an exciting insight into the new album.

The Subways are currently on tour across the UK and their new album, ‘All Or Nothing’, is due for release in June 2008.
