Past, Present and Future : Ed Real

If you don’t know who Ed Real is you probably don’t know much about the London dance scene, along with well as being a DJ and producer, he’s put on some amazing nights and launched one of the biggest dance music MP3 stores in the world. We caught up with Ed, and here is what he had to say…

Past

Briefly, how and when did you get into the music scene?

At the age of 11 I bought the Beastie BoysLicensed To Ill album and Run DMC’s ‘Walk The Way‘ single. From there I was hooked and after consuming metal, Manchester sounds and tonnes more hip hop acts like Public Enemy along came rave… The rest from there is history.

Describe your style in 3 words

Energy with attitude

How was 2008 been so far?

Pretty good, so far the year has been a warm up to the madcap summer schedule. Trackitdown.net and myself are involved in supporting and performing at some of the biggest dance festival events on earth (including Dance Island) and we’re very proud. Electronic music culture is our life and to be in the centre of so many exciting projects is brilliant for us. Trackitdown.net is also sponsoring the DJ Mag Top 100 this year which means the rest of the year is going to be just as exciting.

Who has been your favourite DJs and producers of 2008?

Too many to mention but this year I’m really broadening my horizons when it comes to listening and enjoying dance music. With 6000+ tracks added to Trackitdown.net every week it’s hard not to be overwhelmed but each week I make time to go through the featured tracks in each genre as it’s my job to keep up. There are so many great new artists that have evolved over the last few years and more every week it seems! In some respects us music lovers are spoilt at the moment with every little style and inflection catered for in the world of electronic music.

Present

What are you up to at the moment?

Right now, I’m sitting in the Trackitdown.net office in London signing off the weekly newsletter from the store to our 100,000+ DJ customers. We’ve got some stonking new tunes from the likes of; Audio Bullys, Black Hole, DJ Zinc, Gui Boratto, DeadMau5, Andy Whitby and literally thousands more. It’s another great new week for dance music.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Tiga has a record label called Turbo Recordings and this very moment I’m listening to the incredible 40 Seconds by Proxy on the label which samples Robocop. Probably the filthiest electro dirt-fest of the week!

What do you do when you’re not gigging?

I work at Trackitdown.net and hustle for more gigs! It’s a 24-7 lifestyle that needs 100% focus otherwise it’s not gonna happen. When I travel around the country and world I try to hook up with as many of my much neglected friends, most of whom are now used to me coming round their house at 4am in the morning and going straight to sleep after a night on the road.

Where can people get your tunes?

Have a guess :-)

Future

What do you have planned for the rest of 2008?

I’m playing a tonne of big festivals around the world and my personal highlight will be the 50,000 strong Burning Man festival in the Nevada Desert in USA.It’s 7 days and nights non stop and there are two rules; no money and no guns! After that I’m off to Las Vegas to hang out and you guessed it… Shoot guns!

Who do you think will be the next big thing this year?

I think it’s wide open. There’s a lot of hype about new producers but once that clears it’ll be interesting to see has really made a serious impact on our scene.
