Past, Present and Future : The Shortwave Set

Written by Vince Pettit | Thursday, June 26, 2008 |

The Shortwave Set

We spoke to Andy from The Shortwave Set ahead of Glastonbury, they’ve just released their Danger Mouse produced second album, played Massive Attacks’ Meltdown Festival and are about to release new single Now Til ‘69 on 4th August, so read on to find out a little bit of history, what he’s up to at the moment and what’s planned for the future.

Past

Briefly, how and when did you get into the music scene?

I’ve been surrounded by bands and musos for longer than I care to remember. Everyone’s in a band right? And if they’re not in a band they’re making a film. Or writing a book. Anyway I suppose it got to the point where it seemed churlish not to join in.

Describe your style in 3 words

Classic Victorian funk

How was 2008 been so far?

Busy. We have reacquainted ourselves with the glorious catering opportunities associated with the nation’s motorway service stations.

Who have been your favourite bands of 2008?

Crystal Castles we like, Fleet Foxes, and Vampire Weekend.

Present

What are you up to at the moment?

We are preparing for Glastonbury. I have taken the rather foolish decision to shun the wellington boot. Maybe I shall live to regret it.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Piper at the gates of dawn by Pink Floyd is currently undergoing something of a revival at my house, also the Sophtware Slump by Granddaddy.

What do you do when you’re not gigging?

When I’m not gigging, I generally sit around writing and recording, whilst wishing I was out gigging. When I’m out gigging I wish I was sat at home writing and recording.

Where can people get your tunes?

All reputable music stores both online and in the old fashioned compact disc/vinyl formats.

Future

What do you have planned for the rest of 2008?

The wheels of industry must relentlessly keep turning, so we will have our noses to the grindstone playing our songs in a town near everyone.

Who do you think will be the next big thing this year?

I can see Britney Spears ballooning to the size of the Goodyear blimp if she doesn’t go steady with the pies.
