Past, Present and Future : Will Streetwise

Will owns and runs legendry Streetwise Music, one of the biggest and most established breakbeat retailers in the world. “Our releases are always well upfront and our selection is impeccable and as one of the UK’s Coolcuts shops we have played a significant part in shaping the music played by Djs around the world.”
Past
Briefly, how and when did you get into the music scene?
Late 90’s really when I first started going out to the big raves, then it grew from there. I was always into throwing events and promoting and it weren’t till later in life DJing and Producing came round through running Streetwise.
Describe your style in 3 words
Breaks, Breakbeat, Breakz
How was 2008 been so far?
Good, working hard and the shop keeps me super busy. Just sorted out representation with a big agency so the guys there been pushing me and getting me lots of work (Big Up Jon and Micky www.urbanagency.co.uk ). Played some great events this year and been able to get some more studio time as last year was lacking in production due to the birth of my daughter and the launch of our new Digital section here at Streetwise.
Who has been your favourite of 2008?
Too many to mention but a few in the breaks scene producers wise: High Eight, Alex Metric, Rico Tubbs, Dom Almond, Nick Thayer, Deekline and Plaza De Funk. Other people, productive people, do’ers : Mr B, Mastervibe, Freerange Boys, Bud, Perfection……
Present
What are you up to at the moment?
Putting the final touches to our new website which launches in the next few weeks, finishing some studio projects with Matty Perfection and a hell of a lot of DJing !
Who are you listening to at the moment?
Plumps, Stanton’s, Deekline, General Midi, Tayo, Quest, Sam Hell, Rennie Pilgrim, Nick Thayer, Maelstrom, Body Snatchers, NAPT, Mowgli, High Eight, Mike Lennon, Beat Assassins, Dom Almond, A Dominant Species, Meat Katie, Elite Force, Backdraft, Michael Morph, That Girl DJ, Switch, Ben Hash Key, Groove Diggerz, Noisia….im lucky that I spend all day listening to fresh releases. Also NSB Radio, tune in and check it out.
What do you do when you’re not gigging?
Running the shop takes all my time really, but I like to spend as much free time as I can with my daughter Sophie.

Future
What do you have planned for the rest of 2008?
Launch the new SWM site, loads of events and some more production. Also playing a lot outside the UK.
Who do you think will be the next big thing this year?
Who or what ? Who got to be High Eight he’s label is one of the best in the breaks scene and his productions are up there with the big dogs. What, got to be Dubstep and cross genre labels like Cool and Deadly not to mention a new Streetwise Presents label coming real soon.
