Written by Vince Pettit | Thursday, July 10, 2008 |

Rico Tubbs has been the broken beats pioneer in Finland since 1994. Co-founder of the first Finnish breakbeat label Pyssy and half of the chart topping hip hop/beats producer duo Skillsters. Voted for the best electronic music dj in Finland in 2006 and again in 2007.
Past
Briefly, how and when did you get into the music scene?
Around 94 - I had been going to raves and collecting 12″’s just to hear good tunes and eventually
had a chance to dj at one clubnight. Two weeks after that I organised my own clubnight.
Describe your style in 3 words
Full of energy
How was 2008 been so far?
My busiest ever! I’ve never done so much work both production and dj wise. And I’m glad that people seem to enjoy it too.
Who has been your favourite DJs and producers of 2008?
Production wise there’s lot of good stuff coming from “A New Hope” label, also feeling Don Rimini, AC Slater, Kanji Kinetic, Shinichi Osawa and Crookers of course who also played a blinding set at Fabric.
Present
What are you up to at the moment?
Just finished 3 remixes and got 2 more under construction also finishing new stuff to Sindens Counterfeet label.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
Bengas “Diary of an Afro Warrior” has been on heavy rotation. Also listening some 80’s discoboogie and italo.
What do you do when you’re not playing out?
Usually producing and doing some sports - Swimming , running ,cross country skiing etc. I like to read some non fiction too but havent had time lately…
Where can people get your tunes?
Should be available now pretty much everywhere from itunes to more specialized netshops - beatport, trackitdown…
Album is out as double cd too and should be widely available.
Future
What do you have planned for the rest of 2008?
Calendar is filling quite fast so lot of gigs - hopefully get to see some other continents.
I have lots ideas in store for new tunes too so if I can get those out there’ll be more releases
Who do you think will be the next big thing this year?
I have no idea - all artists I’ve mentioned (maybe except Crookers) are probably too marginal to become big.
