Past, Present and Future : Jay Cunning
Written by Vince Pettit | Friday, July 11, 2008 |

Jay Cunning’s been in the mix since day one with various styles of Old Skool, House, DnB and dare we say it; Garage. In 1996 he started to consolidate this jockey sluttage and opted for a bit of monogamy and settled down with Breakbeat.
Nowadays his Weekly show on Kiss FM, residency at Andy C’s Ram nite at ‘The End‘, international gigs and the running of Menu Music sees Jay as one of the hardest working DJs on the scene.
Since his early residency on Breaks FM back in 99 Jay’s 3 deck versatility he’s seen him putting about across the world from Russia to Canada, Spain to New Zealand and has acclaimed production collaborations with some of these scenes finest.
Jay joined forces with Atomic Hooligan in 2004 to form ‘Menu Music’, a concept that focus’s on throwing up big party tunes on their now highly acclaimed record label
Past
Briefly, how and when did you get into the music scene?
I initially got into the dance scene back in 1989 listening to pirate radio stations in London and from the moment I was able to get into a club I was there every week. I started out listening to Acid House and moved into the Hardcore / Jungle sound as it developed in the early 90’s. Since then I’ve been into all different styles.
Describe your style in 3 words
Relentless, Bassheavy & Energetic
How was 2008 been so far?
Full on! I’ve been all over the world Djing and have also been focusing on the new Rico Tubbs album “Knuckle Sandwich” which is out on my Menu Music label which I run with Atomic Hooligan. I’ve also started focusing more on my own productions which I’ve not been able to do for a few years. The radio show I have on Kiss FM has been going from strength to strength with some great high profile guests
Who has been your favourite DJs and producers of 2008?
Quest by far has been outstanding on the production front, his remix of Jonny L’s “Back To Your Roots” and his original track “Sky’s The Limit” with Dj Mutinty have been in all my sets this year
Present
What are you up to at the moment?
Getting ready for Glade Festival, I played there with Atomic Hooligan 3 years ago and we were claimed to have the set of the festival so we’re aiming to beat that!
Who are you listening to at the moment?
DJ Sets from World Dance in 1994. These are pure energy sets from Hype, Slipmatt, Ellis Dee & Kenny Ken with MC GQ from back in the day at Wembley
What do you do when you’re not playing out?
Run a record label, sort tunes & guests for my Kiss FM show, sit in a studio… Free time is not something I have!
Where can people get your tunes?
For vinyl heads go to KnowHowrecords.co.uk, for digital Beatport.com
Future
What do you have planned for the rest of 2008?
More gigs round the globe, some big releases from Menu including a new Hardy Hard & Lady Waks feat Afrikaa Bambaataa with a rather tasty Atomic Hooligan remix and of course some serious guests on my weekly Kiss FM radio show
Who do you think will be the next big thing this year?
Rico Tubbs already has a good name but his new album is set to soar him up amongst the big league ranks!
