With the help of the Dick Van Dyke School of vocalisation, the latest offering from Kate Nash establishes itself as another of her trademark songs within seconds.
The distinct accented vocals and down-to-earth lyrics such as “don’t tell me you didn’t try and check out my bum” coupled with a decisively kitsch title, merry happy (think pumpkin soup‘, help mould this song into something of a parody of itself. | Full Article »

The re-release of Brighton duo Blood Red Shoes’ You Bring Me Down, patterned with cleverly stuttered guitar riffs and singer Laura-Mary’s edgy vocals, sets itself out to be equally as refreshing as their earlier tracks within its first verse. Although the lyrics aren’t perhaps as in keeping with the stylings of the vocals and backing as previous track “How to Pass the Time”, by the time the chorus kicks in the adrenaline Blood Red Shoes seem so apt in creating is appreciatively found and cements this track’s high standard. | Full Article »

There’s always the concern with an artist from a successful group releasing a solo record that it will simply be a poor re-invention of the group’s sound: Keith Drew of Canadian indie band ‘Broken Social Scene’s first solo LP, ‘Spirit if’, certainly doesn’t seem to invest much hope of any change, especially with the branding of his solo effort as ‘Broken Social Scene presents’ - and yet the latest release from his album, ‘Safety Bricks‘ seems to breaks these conventions within the its opening 10 seconds.
